An extremely fine Model of Admiral Lord Nelson’s Flagship VICTORY. Constructed from plans and photographs taken of actual Victory now in Portsmouth. We consider this to be the finest model ever made of the Victory. The detail work is astonishing, much of it obscured by ropes made to scale, e.g. blocks have tiny brass sheaves inside created so that they work, for the sake of authenticity. Most of the carving, including little figures on deck, were executed in bone as the finish could not be achieved in wood because of the grain. Nelson standing on deck even has silver medals. The hull is planked on frame of various woods without the use of paint. The hull below the waterline is made of separate plates of copper. Detail of figures (only just over an inch tall) is incredible, each character with own facial expression. The model is contained within a fine glazed mahogany case, the base inlaid with crest of various woods. Fact. Nelson’s eye patch was used to protect his good eye. It was made of pale horn and attached to his hat. Dimensions of case – Length 175 cm. (69 inches) Height 126 cm (49.5 inches) Width 70 cm (27.5 inches) |
